Tired of the pace and noise of life near London and longing for a better place to raise their young children, Mary J. MacLeod (known to all as Julia) and her husband encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud owners of a near-derelict croft house—a farmer’s stone cottage—on “a small acre” of land. Mary assumed duties as the island’s district nurse. Call the Nurse is her account of the first enchanted years she and her family spent there, coming to know its folk as both patients and friends.
Lastly, you could always order flowers or balloons and send to your recent nursing school graduate as a gift, and this will be a great way to show them you care. I listed this one last because, although it is very thoughtful and creative, flowers quickly die and balloons deflate. But it is still a wonderful option if you can’t think of anything else, and some people LOVE flowers, while others are more practical and would prefer to have a gift that will last more than a day or so. If you know they have a birthday, graduation, retirement, holiday or you share a professional relationship (in this case a traditional/common gift may be appropriate) such as a teacher/nursing instrucor or a labor/delivery nurse and you want to give them a good gift plan early and save yourself both the time and stress that comes with last minute shopping/gift giving.
Serving the duel purpose of relaxation while also humidifying the room, an aromatherapy diffuser is the perfect gift idea for a nurse who wants to come home and unplug from it all. We recommend the InnoGear brand thanks to its great user accolades and features such as auto shut off and changing color options that both adults and kids will find fun.

Celebrate years of hard work and the end of a long career—as well as the beginning of more relaxing free time—with retirement greeting cards and retirement gifts. Whether the retiree is planning on more travel, more golf or more time with their grandchildren, you'll find great retirement gift ideas at Hallmark. The best retirement gifts come from the heart and may depend on your relationship with the retiree. Think about their hobbies and future plans. Inspirational books and movies are always popular retirement gifts as well.

Theresa Brown, RN, has been a favorite nurse author of mine for a long time. She is a frequent contributor in the New York Times and American Journal of Nursing, and in 2011, wrote Critical Care: A New Nurse Faces Death, Life, and Everything in Between. In The Shift, Miss Brown takes the reader through her full 12-hour shift in a busy oncology unit. In addition to learning about the patients she cares for with such knowledge and skill during this shift, what strikes me is how Miss Brown illuminates her decision-making. We know that as nurses, critical thinking comes with experience, yet Miss Brown truly explains how she prioritizes care without the reader even realizing that is what’s happening. Read the book – you’ll see what I mean! This will make a perfect gift for hospital nurses who understand just how  much can happen in one 12-hour shift.

This film…I could watch it over and over again! This is truly a treasure for the nursing profession. In the American Nurse Project, the director, Carolyn Jones, captures the passion of several nurses as she shares their unique stories. This year, at Nursing Management Congress, I actually got to meet Miss Jones, which was such a highlight for me. The book is on my wish list this December – I’ll keep you posted if I receive it! Think about sharing this film with all nurses who are passionate about the care they provide and the people they touch. ">

The best retirement gift will depend on the recipient's interests and personality as well as your relationship. You might look for a keepsake or ornament, or a book that offers personal, legal or financial guidance on navigating the next stage of their life. Another approach is to buy them something they can use for a hobby or interest they'll now have more time for, such as golf. Movies also make great retirement gifts. ">

On a nurse’s busiest days they can end up walking miles and miles—give them the gift of being able to track that exercise! In such a demanding career, it can be difficult to factor in time for working out but a wearable device such as FitBit allows you to track how much activity you have actually done during the day. It also tracks your sleep and lets the nurse in your life monitor their own health data and stay motivated with their health.
Most underscrub tees are meant solely to give you an added layer of protection under your scrubs, but not this one. The Core One Underscrub Tee is as versatile as it is soft and comfortable, making this the perfect gift for the nurse who needs to seamlessly transition from the hospital, to the grocery store, and even to the gym. The buttery-soft performance fabric is lightweight and wicks away moisture, and the reinforced seams ensure that this gift will work as hard as nurses do. ">
If you’re someone that has been interested in buying your favorite nurse a stethoscope, but don’t know which one they’d like this stethoscope makes for a very thoughtful gift that any nurse is sure to appreciate whether they’re a graduate nursing student, just starting out in their career or are simply in need of a new stethoscope, but haven’t had a chance to get one.
