Theresa Brown, RN, has been a favorite nurse author of mine for a long time. She is a frequent contributor in the New York Times and American Journal of Nursing, and in 2011, wrote Critical Care: A New Nurse Faces Death, Life, and Everything in Between. In The Shift, Miss Brown takes the reader through her full 12-hour shift in a busy oncology unit. In addition to learning about the patients she cares for with such knowledge and skill during this shift, what strikes me is how Miss Brown illuminates her decision-making. We know that as nurses, critical thinking comes with experience, yet Miss Brown truly explains how she prioritizes care without the reader even realizing that is what’s happening. Read the book – you’ll see what I mean! This will make a perfect gift for hospital nurses who understand just how  much can happen in one 12-hour shift.
Speaking from someone who is graduating on Sat- I would tell people to give her $$$$$$$$$$$$ if they want to give her something. I know it isn't very specific or unique to nurses but if she is in a similar situation as I am-she probably needs the cash! Even though I have worked all through school, I am completely broke and am praying relatives will give me cash because even though I have a job lined up -the soonest they will let me start is the 13th of may. So there you have it-a nice thoughtful card with some greenbacks would be a beautiful gift for a new grad to recieve. And maybe a gift cert-for some nice new scrubs!

Serving the duel purpose of relaxation while also humidifying the room, an aromatherapy diffuser is the perfect gift idea for a nurse who wants to come home and unplug from it all. We recommend the InnoGear brand thanks to its great user accolades and features such as auto shut off and changing color options that both adults and kids will find fun. ">

The best retirement gift will depend on the recipient's interests and personality as well as your relationship. You might look for a keepsake or ornament, or a book that offers personal, legal or financial guidance on navigating the next stage of their life. Another approach is to buy them something they can use for a hobby or interest they'll now have more time for, such as golf. Movies also make great retirement gifts. ">

Getting something a nurse needs and will use every day is a great idea. If you buy something like a stethoscope or nursing shoes, you can be sure they will get plenty of use out of it. You can also consider getting an item that will help them with clinical judgment and critical thinking. A great book like Becoming Nursey, The Nerdy Nurse’s Guide to Technology, or The Nurse’s Guide to Blogging would be a good choice. We wrote a whole post on practical gifts for nurses if you want some more ideas.

When my parents asked me what I wanted for my nursing school graduation gift, I asked for a gift card to a scrub shop!  Most new nurses don’t have a lot of scrubs already–they may only have the scrubs with their school’s emblem stitched on.  So the gift of new scrubs is a very practical option!  I love Lydia’s Scrubs for their wide selection and reasonable prices, and it’s easy to order online.

After 2-4 years of tuition, textbooks, little to no income, and potential debt, cash is always great. Besides, cash (or check), is often a standard for most graduates. How much cash should you give? That completely depends on your relationship with the person, and your own financial means. If they are a son/daughter or best friend, you’ll probably give more. If they are a distant relative or acquaintance, probably less. $20-50 is usually acceptable for distant relationships, while $50-100 is usually a good range if you are closer. For very special people, there is no limit.

While cash is often king, what’s the next best thing other than cash? Gift cards. A great idea for a recent nursing graduate is to get them a gift card to a local nursing or uniform shop. Most healthcare organizations have strict clothing requirements (such as scrub colors, shoe colors, etc.)–so it would be best to allow the graduate to pick out their own clothing once hired. Plus, clothing is always a tricky gift idea, because you never know if it will fit. It’s best to let them try it on.

How 'bout for those tired of runnin' dogs of hers getting "broke in" to running on the floors as a new nurse? Try a foot bath/massager, easy to use, soooo soothing to those aching feet when she gets home from work! Add a pedicure kit to it containing reviving lotion for feet, callous pad, nail polish, toe separater to aid in keeping toes apart while painting toenails, that type of accessory in addition to the foot massager/foot bath itself. It is electric, just add water to a certain level, turn it on....ahhhh, instant blessed relief with heat, no less! ">

Nurses: they’ve been saving lives, taking pulses and caring for others since the beginning of time. Want to know just what to write in it? We’ll help you say it in just the right way. And gifts for nurses are always appreciated, especially gifts that make their job just a little bit easier—like a travel mug, soothing hand cream or a fancy pen.  A wood quote sign or figurine about nursing also makes a great nursing graduation gift. For many years the newly retired nurse will have dedicated her life to caring for others. It’s about time she enjoyed a spot of pampering herself. Give her a gift voucher that can be exchanged for a massage, manicure, pedicure, or hair style. She could use it for a reflexology session, day at her local spa, Reiki session, or a makeover. If there are a few people that are willing to pool finances, you might be able to treat her to a weekend away. ">

This film…I could watch it over and over again! This is truly a treasure for the nursing profession. In the American Nurse Project, the director, Carolyn Jones, captures the passion of several nurses as she shares their unique stories. This year, at Nursing Management Congress, I actually got to meet Miss Jones, which was such a highlight for me. The book is on my wish list this December – I’ll keep you posted if I receive it! Think about sharing this film with all nurses who are passionate about the care they provide and the people they touch.
Jon Haws RN began his nursing career at a Level I Trauma ICU in DFW working as a code team nurse, charge nurse, and preceptor. Frustrated with the nursing education process, Jon started NRSNG in 2014 with a desire to provide tools and confidence to nursing students around the globe. When he's not busting out content for NRSNG, Jon enjoys spending time with his two kids and wife. ">
Earlier this year, Nurse Blake and Nurse.org started the ‘Nurses Support Their Young’ movement to end the phrase and culture of ‘nurses eat their young.’ Together, the campaign has gained international attention and is already creating positive change within the nursing community. We hope to create a culture based on kindness, civility, and respect for many nursing generations to come. If you’d like to show your support for nurses, hoodies, mugs, posters, and pillows are available here. 100% of profit is donated to the University Nurse Camp for high school students! While you’re at it - sign the pledge, here!
